The following beautiful address to sleep, with the three
attempts at a translation into English, may serve to fill up
a corner of your next, if not pre-engaged by politics,
Your's, [signed] Clio.
[verse follows in Latin]
TO SLEEP.
Hail! downy sleep, sure emblem of the dead,
Welcome, the friendly partner of my bed;
Come grateful slumbers; oh! what bliss to lye,
Dead, thus alive! and living thus to die!
[2 other attempts at translation follow.]
